#2038 Fifteen rules for leadership (and Life!)

  1. Surround yourself with great people. Great people will make you feel like you’re great too.

  2. Be impenetrable to social pressure and adaptable to new evidence.

  3. Without being gratuitous, give credit, offer a compliment, and eschew the spotlight.

  4. Receive compliments with grace, not false humility.

  5. Always maintain good eye contact. Breaking it too soon or too often makes you look dodgy, while holding it too long makes you look creepy.

  6. PUT THE PHONE AWAY WHEN YOU’RE IN A CONVERSATION.

  7. Smile – A LOT.

  8. When presented with an untoward story about someone you know, say something like, “I’m not sure that’s true.” Or “I’ll reserve judgment.”

  9. Don’t pile on. Too often, complaints presented in a group become a game of “can you top this.” Don’t.

10. Pay attention to small signs. A whiff of something rotten in the kitchen garbage isn’t going to get better over time.  It needs to be taken out.

11. Show up. Show up. Show up.

12. Ask questions. Ask questions. Ask questions.

13. Make the call, send the note, keep the date.

14. Ask what happened and genuinely wait for an answer before passing judgment.

15. Be present.  Give 100% of your attention to the person or task in front of you.
