#1114 Mood Enhancers

I just read that in 2023, antidepressants were prescribed at a rate that is 500 times the rate they were prescribed twenty years ago.

There is a lot to unpack here. First, that can mean that folks who were suffering and never got help are finally getting the help these drugs can offer.

I'm sure that's part of the equation, but not the whole 500X.

500X means some of us are looking for help in all the wrong places. The quick dopamine hit when your post gets a dozen likes is swiftly replaced by cortisol when you read that negative comment or find your post ignored.

Help for social media disappointments is not in your pocket.

Our bodies produce antidepressants on demand. Endorphins are natural painkillers. They bind to opioid receptors in the brain to reduce pain and create a sense of well-being.

"Yeah, prescribe some of that!"

You don't need to achieve a runner's high to enjoy the positive effects of endorphins. A brisk walk will get them flowing, and dopamine and oxytocin (feel-good neurotransmitters) are readily available, too.

Recent science shows that positive social interaction, group activities, and supportive and encouraging conversations with other people all get them flowing.

What else do walking, running, group sports, hobby clubs, and social interactions have in common?

None of them are on our phones.

I love my phone.

I love sending pictures of the great-grandkids to my Mom and Dad, having instant access to information, using my language learning app, and knowing what the weather will be like this weekend at home and in my vacation spot. I don't want to give up my phone. But let's remember where this post began: 500X antidepressants over the past twenty years. We all know that we have replaced some of our people-to-people interactions with texting and social media. I feel strongly that this is part of the 500X.

If you want to be happier, walk, bike, jog, play a game, and meet others, mano a mano. It is the best prescription for many of us.

PS: Of course, if you need prescribed medication and it helps you, I am not advocating giving that up. I'm 100% for whatever you and your doctor know helps you. My commentary is only about the overuse of drugs that may be mitigated with the activities I described.
