#1189 That’s Swell?
“Some men grow while others merely swell.” Woodrow Wilson
Let’s take this in two different directions.
First, the way Wilson intended it as a metaphor for personal development. To grow, in this case, means to improve. I am thinking again of Socrates, who said that an unexamined life is not worth living. There is no growth without examination. If you think you’re “done,” you’re likely to use Wilson’s quote, “swollen”.
Don’t we picture the blowhard, self-righteous crowd this way? When I say those words, is the image you draw of some W.C. Fields look-alike politician spouting without substance?
Conversely, don’t you paint a mental picture of an older, fit, avuncular person with an empathetic face when you think about someone with a growth mindset?
As I have said before, there is no standing still. You are either actively seeking improvement or declining.
While Wilson was talking about gravitas and intellectual prowess, couldn’t we consider it physical as well?
Some grow their endurance, heart strength, and muscle tone, while others snack and swell. Statistics show that 55% of us live at an unhealthy weight due to a diet heavy in processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle.
We all need to apply Wilson’s quote both ways. I don’t suggest that if you are 50 or 60+ years old, you need to grow 18-inch biceps and strive to have a six-pack.
What I strongly suggest is that we try to eat more whole foods, consume fewer calories, and move our bodies. We also have to read things that matter, socialize with good people, have intelligent conversations, and maintain an open or growth mindset.
Neither needs to be extreme, but both need to be a part of our conscious behaviors. Let’s grow…not swell.
