How dangerous is a stick of dynamite? How many apples are in a seed?

Do you remember the movie Trading Places? What about Pygmalion?

How much potential goes untapped?  Millions of sticks of dynamite with the potential to explode, lay dormant in storage facilities never to be used for what they were created for. They, along with their unused potential will eventually end up on the scrap heap.

One of my top three favorite quotes of all time comes from George Bernard Shaw.

“This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. Being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Who are you?  Who do you want to be? Regardless of your age I ask that question and ask you to ask it internally.  Shaw suggests you can be a force of nature if you find a purpose. And he emphasizes that it is a purpose recognized by you as being worthwhile. This takes away these notions of grandeur and the misshapen idea most of the world has about success.

For me the most telling part of the quote is the ending.  I love his description of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances. Who wants to be that?! And then the ending, for me, is the very definition of success – the acceptance that your life is the sum total of all of the decisions and actions you have made. It’s on us.

We are where we are because of what we have thought, done and not done and the absolute flip side to what I see as a successful person is one who would complain that the world will not devote itself to making them happy.

It is never about what happens to us in life but rather about our response.  How else can you explain the proverbial miser vs. a happy family living hand to mouth.

So who are you?  Who do you want to be? Are you living your life in a way that will outlive you?

Every day – in fact every minute – is an opportunity to change.  Light your fuse and explode all of you and who you were created to be on the world.
